The MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Matome Chiloane, led the commemoration of Human Rights Day in Sharpeville, addressing residents and visitors at the historic site of the Sharpeville Massacre.

In his keynote speech, he reflected on the tragic events of 21 March 1960, when apartheid police opened fire on unarmed protesters, claiming 69 lives, and emphasized the enduring significance of the struggle for human rights and freedom in South Africa.

Chiloane urged the community to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought against apartheid and highlighted the importance of promoting social justice, equality, and unity in the present day. The event featured cultural performances and speeches that paid tribute to the resilience of the people of Sharpeville, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to inspire future generations.
