The Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) was at the centre of the Sharpeville Massacre, playing a leading role in organising the protest against apartheid pass laws.

The Sharpeville Massacre of 21 March 1960 was a defining political moment in South Africa’s apartheid era. When unarmed Black South Africans protested against the oppressive pass laws, the apartheid regime responded with lethal force, killing 69 and injuring over 180.

At a Sharpeville commemoration event, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre must remind South Africans of the unfulfilled promise of human rights and dignity, arguing that the current ruling party has eroded the gains made since 1994 and failed to deliver a better life for all.
