JOHANNESBURG- The United National Transport Union (UNTU) has approached the Labour Court in an effort to stop planned job cuts at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), which intends to retrench more than 600 employees in its Mainline Passenger Services Division. The union argues that the proposed retrenchment process could lead to a major loss of jobs and is therefore describing it as a “jobs bloodbath.”

UNTU says PRASA’s consultation process was not transparent and that labour unions were not given adequate information during discussions. PRASA has since cancelled a scheduled meeting, stating that the matter is now before the courts. The case is expected to be heard in the Labour Court next Friday.
