The National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has classified the recent severe weather affecting several provinces in South Africa as a national disaster. The declaration follows widespread heavy rainfall, flooding, thunderstorms, damaging winds and snowfall experienced since 4 May 2026.

According to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), provinces affected include the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape, North West and Mpumalanga. The South African Weather Service had earlier warned of cold, wet and windy conditions as authorities continue monitoring the impact of the extreme weather.
