The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe weather conditions affecting large parts of the country from 29 April 2026, driven by a cut-off low (COL) system moving across the central interior. A Yellow Level 2 warning is in place for severe thunderstorms over parts of the Northern Cape, North West, and Free State, with risks of strong winds, hail, and heavy downpours that may lead to localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements. Rainfall is expected to increase significantly overnight, with scattered to widespread showers developing across the interior.

Conditions are expected to intensify on 30 April 2026, with an Orange Level 6 warning issued for parts of the Northern Cape, North West, and Free State, where rainfall could reach up to 90 mm in some areas. Widespread thunderstorms, flooding risks, and a noticeable drop in temperatures are forecast as the system spreads eastwards. By 1 May 2026, the cut-off low is expected to move out of the country, leaving behind isolated to scattered showers and improved conditions, although SAWS advises caution on roads and in flood-prone areas during the transition period.
