The Gauteng Department of Community Safety, led by the Acting Head of Department, Mr Sipho Thanjekwayo, today attended the sentencing proceedings of Lungile Nxelelwa who was in 2019 convicted for the murder of his 27-year-old girlfriend, Keneilwe Pule from Sebokeng.

In a statement, The Gauteng Department of Community Safety says that Keneilwe was raped, killed using a grinder, and ultimately set alight. “This is one of the many cases that were ringfenced by Ikhaya Lethemba victim empowerment centre. The centre provided the family with pyscho-social and medico-legal support.”

Mr Thanjekwayo says that the department is satisfied with the verdict, the conviction and the sentence of life in prison, “We are hoping that this sends a strong message to society that if you do such a horrible and horrendous act to women, the justice system will catch up with you and you will be sentenced to life. Men should respect women and children instead of abusing them.”

Lungile was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, another life-imprisonment for rape while also handed down five years for attempted murder. All these sentences will run concurrently and effective immediately.

The sentence proceedings were at 10:00am this morning at the High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate Court, Court 4

Pule’s family says they can finally begin to heal.
