The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the Sedibeng region has urged that the inquiry into the 1990 Sebokeng Massacre be reopened, saying justice has yet to be served for the victims and their families. Fourteen people were killed and many more injured when the Apartheid-era Civil Co‑operation Bureau (CCB) opened fire on protesters.
The march involved around 50,000 Sebokeng residents who were protesting a tax-based revenue system that favoured white towns such as Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, while black townships like Sebokeng remained underdeveloped and denied basic municipal services. SANCO says revisiting the inquiry is necessary to address these historical injustices.
