MOSCOW- Russian President Vladimir Putin says he believes the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could be coming to an end. Speaking after a scaled-back Victory Day military parade in Moscow, Putin referred to the war as a “special military operation” and criticised Western countries for continuing to support the Ukrainian government. Security concerns also led to fewer tanks and missiles being displayed during the parade, amid fears of possible drone attacks.

A temporary ceasefire between Moscow and Kyiv, reportedly brokered by US President Donald Trump, helped prevent disruptions during the event. Putin later defended the war during his Victory Day speech, claiming Russia was fighting a “just” war against what he called an aggressive Ukraine backed by Nato. He also stated that he would only meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky once a lasting peace agreement had been reached.
