VEREENIGING – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Vereeniging has confirmed an investigation of a business robbery and fatal shooting that took place on Voortrekker Street on Friday, 28 March 2025, at approximately 10:48.
According to the media statement issued by Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela, three armed suspects entered a local shop and held the owner at gunpoint while demanding cash. One suspect proceeded to the office and took an undisclosed amount of money.
In an act of self-defense, the shop owner—who was legally armed—fired his weapon, striking one of the suspects. The other two fled the scene.
A short while later, the wounded suspect was discovered lying near a car dealership. Emergency responders declared him dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been confirmed, and his remains have been transported to the Sebokeng Pathology Mortuary for further investigation.
According to SAPS Spokesperson, Sergeant Maxambela, no arrests have been made yet.
Police are actively searching for the remaining suspects, who are still at large. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence in an effort to track them down.
