UNITED KINGDOM- major legal battle against Johnson & Johnson has expanded to 7,111 claimants, making it the largest product liability case in UK history. The case, currently before the High Court, centres on allegations that the company knowingly sold baby powder contaminated with asbestos. Claimants argue that J&J was aware of potential contamination risks as early as the 1960s, with many now suffering from cancers such as ovarian cancer and mesothelioma linked to asbestos exposure.
Johnson & Johnson denies all allegations, including claims that it knowingly distributed contaminated products. While both sides agree the case should proceed as group litigation, disputes remain over the scope of evidence required. Lawyers representing the claimants argue that some of the defendant’s demands are excessive and unnecessary, effectively requiring full witness statements from each individual involved.
