GAUTENG- major crackdown by the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate has exposed widespread lawlessness among minibus taxi operators across Gauteng. Nearly 200 drivers were found operating without valid licences, while dozens more vehicles were on the road without proper documentation, raising serious concerns about passenger safety and regulatory compliance.
The operation also uncovered dangerous vehicle conditions, with over 100 taxis removed from service due to mechanical defects. More than 1,600 fines were issued and three motorists arrested for offences including drunk driving and bribery. Authorities say the findings highlight ongoing challenges in the public transport sector and signal a tougher stance against illegal and unsafe practices.
