EUROPE- European lawmakers have backed a proposal to define rape across the EU as sex without active, explicit consent, in a move aimed at strengthening protections for survivors of sexual violence. The European Parliament overwhelmingly supported the resolution, calling on all member states to adopt a “yes means yes” standard, where consent must be clearly given rather than assumed.

The new approach seeks to replace the traditional “no means no” framework, which critics say can leave gaps in prosecution and allow offenders to escape accountability. Under the proposed standard, any consent obtained through coercion would not be considered valid, with the goal of closing legal loopholes and improving justice for victims across EU countries.
