The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has strongly criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to appoint Roelf Meyer as South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, calling the move deeply troubling. The party argues that selecting a former apartheid-era minister reflects poorly on the government and raises concerns about the African National Congress’s commitment to the country’s full liberation.
ATM parliamentary leader Vuyo Zungula rejected the appointment, describing it as political regression. He accused the government of trying to appease the United States under Donald Trump, adding that this comes at the cost of South Africa’s sovereignty and liberation legacy, particularly in light of what he called false claims about a “genocide” in the country.
