A petition calling for the disbandment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has sparked debate over the institution’s role and relevance. Critics argue that the commission has failed to act impartially and accuse it of prioritising the rights of undocumented foreign nationals over broader public concerns, particularly around immigration and service delivery challenges. The petition is reported to have gathered around 30,000 signatures.

Activist Lwazi Gwijane claims the SAHRC has not adequately addressed illegal immigration concerns, alleging bias in its approach. However, the SAHRC maintains that it remains committed to protecting constitutional rights and holding authority accountable. Meanwhile, advocacy group Good Governance Africa has suggested that instead of disbanding the commission, discussions should focus on reforming and strengthening Chapter 9 institutions.
