JOHANNESBURG – The winter initiation season has claimed 43 lives across South Africa. Authorities have arrested 40 people, closed 58 illegal initiation schools and opened 116 criminal cases.

Mpumalanga has recorded the highest number of deaths with 18, followed by the Eastern Cape with 14. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa says accountability will be strengthened against those who fail to uphold safety standards.
