KWAZULU-NATAL – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed concern over ongoing anti-illegal migrant protests in KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of South Africa. The agency recently met with KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli to discuss the growing tensions, as organisations continue calling for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country.

The concerns come as dozens of refugees remain camped outside Home Affairs offices in Durban, citing fears for their safety in local communities. Ntuli said government must enforce immigration laws in accordance with the Constitution while protecting human rights. He stressed the need to reject both xenophobia and lawlessness, calling for a balanced approach that promotes social cohesion, accountability, and respect for rights and responsibilities.
