Gauteng Transport MEC, Jacob Mamabolo, has called on motorists who have slots allocated for driver licence renewals to ensure they keep to their bookings.

Calls are mounting for Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, to extend the grace period deadline for driver license renewals. Several motorists whose licences expired between March and December last year say they have been unable to make renewal bookings, with an August 31 deadline looming.

Mamabolo says the sector is awaiting a response from the minister on the matter.

“As from January to today we are sitting with about 130 000 slots that we have issued. If people are given slots, they need to take them up. We as government must do our part and we can only win this if we work in a cooperative way amongst all of us. For those people who may not have booked the slots, in Gauteng we have been working on a solution- such as the SMS system – we are going to rework it in line with what the minister will say. So people shouldn’t panic, we will support and work with them.”
