There’s been a spike in influenza cases in the country, with many people requiring hospitalisation. Sibongile Walaza from the NICD unpacks this.

There’s been a spike in influenza cases in the country, with many people requiring hospitalisation.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases says the surge was first noticed in August.

Influenza cases have been identified in five provinces.

The Institute says the easing of COVID-19 restrictions may have contributed to the spike.

Older people as well those with underlying illnesses are at an increased risk.

“Different people are at increased risk. People living with HIV and those with cancer are at increased risk and would require hospitalisation if they do get influenza,” the NICD’s Sibongile Walaza said.
