The Northern Cape’s largest municipality, Sol Plaatjie, may be placed under administration after failing to comply with a March directive from MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Bentley Vass. The directive, issued under Section 139, required the council to justify why the municipality should not be placed under administration or dissolved, but no action has been taken.

The municipality has also faced instability, with several council meetings collapsing due to disagreements over the status of municipal manager Thapelo Matlala. CoGTA spokesperson Tebogo Monyo expressed concern over the ongoing chaos and said a solution for the situation in Kimberley is still being considered.
