KIMBERLEY – Five vacancies in the Sol Plaatje Municipal Council will remain unfilled after the ANC expelled five councillors. The vacancies cannot be filled through by-elections because South African law prohibits municipal by-elections within nine months of Local Government Elections, which are scheduled for 4 November.

The IEC says while the vacancies are unfortunate, municipal operations will continue as normal. Election officials note that vacancies can arise for various reasons, including resignations, deaths, or expulsions, but in this case the seats will remain vacant until after the local government elections.
