FREE STATE – The Special Investigating Unit has released preliminary findings into its investigation of the Free State Provincial Government Bursary Scheme, raising concerns over possible misuse of public funds. The probe, conducted under Presidential Proclamation 123 of 2023, focuses on bursaries administered by the Office of the Premier during the 2017/2018 academic year.
The SIU says payments for accommodation, travel, and stipends may have been irregularly processed, with some funds allegedly going to unqualified beneficiaries. It also found cases where a deceased student received funding from both NSFAS and the provincial government. Several officials have been referred for disciplinary action as the SIU continues efforts to recover misused funds and strengthen oversight systems.
