MEXICO – Mexico secured a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in their opening Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca on Thursday. Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez ensured El Tri started their campaign on a winning note, while Bafana Bafana struggled to match the hosts’ intensity throughout the encounter.
South Africa’s task became even more difficult in the second half after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, reducing Hugo Broos’ side to nine players. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several important saves, including an early stop from Jimenez, but Mexico’s dominance eventually paid off as they claimed all three points in front of their home supporters.
