UPDATE: The Gauteng Education Department has revealed that R45 million is needed to refurbish Riverlea Secondary School in Johannesburg after a fire destroyed several classrooms just a day before the start of the second term, disrupting learning for around 700 pupils.
This is not the first fire at the school, with similar incidents reported last April and in 2007. During a visit to the school, Gauteng MEC for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, highlighted the recurring nature of these incidents and confirmed that plans are underway to repair and restore the school to ensure a safe learning environment.
