The embattled Emfuleni Local Municipality in the Vaal, south of Johannesburg, has reportedly spent nearly R700 million on employee overtime, according to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. The figure was revealed in response to questions from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. The municipality continues to struggle with basic service delivery, including refuse removal, potholes, and deteriorating infrastructure.
Emfuleni mayoral candidate Kingsol Thabalala says the DA will continue pressing for accountability, insisting that those responsible for the misuse of municipal funds must face consequences. The revelations have sparked concerns over financial mismanagement amid worsening service delivery in one of Gauteng’s key municipalities.
