KENYA – Police in Kenya fired tear gas and arrested at least nine people, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, during a protest against plans to develop part of Nairobi National Park. Demonstrators gathered outside the park, arguing that the project would threaten one of the country’s most important protected areas.
The Kenya Wildlife Service says the development will expand an animal orphanage, but protesters fear it will encroach on the park and include a large parking area for more than 1,000 vehicles. Activists say the reserve, which is home to wildlife such as rhinos, lions, buffalo and leopards, must be protected from further development.
