The Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI), working with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), carried out major law-enforcement operations across Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Tshwane in April 2026. More than 500 unroadworthy minibus taxis were taken off the roads, while 573 additional vehicles were issued with discontinuation notices until they meet compliance standards. In Ekurhuleni, 44 private vehicles were also impounded for failing to meet safety requirements.
Authorities issued over 4,000 manual fines and 4,161 electronic infringement notices through e-Force technology. The operations exposed widespread violations, including 957 minibuses operating without valid driving licences and 387 without licence discs. Fourteen motorists were arrested for serious offences such as drunk driving, bribery and obstruction of officers, while another arrest was made for contravening immigration laws. The MEC for Roads and Transport described the crackdown as a crucial step in improving road safety and protecting commuters.
