PRETORIA- The National Press Club (NPC) has officially opened entries for its 2025 Journalist of the Year Competition, introducing two new awards: the Aserie Ndlovu Award for Community Journalism and a Campus Radio Award. The announcement was made in Pretoria, nearly a year after the death of community journalist Sibusiso “Aserie” Ndlovu, whose legacy the new awards aim to honour. The winners will be celebrated at the NPC’s Newsmaker of the Year Gala on 29 May 2026, where Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will be recognised as the 2025 Newsmaker of the Year.

The competition features 12 categories across print, digital, radio, television, and community media, with prize money awarded in each category and a grand prize of R100 000 for the overall winner. The University of South Africa (UNISA) has joined the adjudication panel, strengthening the partnership focused on media freedom and excellence. Journalists, photographers, presenters, and media professionals are encouraged to submit entries before the closing date of 8 May 2026, provided they are paid-up NPC members.
