The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, has announced that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has been placed under administration following serious governance, financial, and operational challenges. Acting under the NSFAS Act, the Minister appointed Professor Hlengani Mathebula as Administrator to stabilise the institution and address issues such as audit failures, system weaknesses, governance instability, and delays affecting student funding and services.

The administration aims to restore accountability, improve systems, and ensure continuity in student funding without disruption. The Minister stressed that allowances, appeals, and payments will continue, and that the intervention is not targeted at individuals but intended to safeguard NSFAS, protect students, and rebuild public confidence in the higher education funding system.
