The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has argued that EFF leader Julius Malema should receive a 15-year prison sentence following his firearm conviction. Malema was found guilty in October last year for allegedly firing several shots in public during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations in 2018.
During pre-sentencing proceedings at the Magistrate’s Court in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape, NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said Malema’s continued denial of the charges, despite what the state describes as overwhelming evidence, is an aggravating factor. The prosecution further argued that a strong sentence is necessary to send a deterrent message and reflect the seriousness of the offence.
