The South African cabinet has condemned the coronation of an alleged Nigerian Igbo king in KuGompo, Eastern Cape, calling it a “kindergarten gimmick” with no legal standing. The ceremony sparked violent protests in multiple areas, including KuGompo, prompting government concern over public safety and diplomatic conduct.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni expressed disgust at the event during a post-cabinet media briefing in Pretoria. She noted that the Nigerian High Commission had apologized and said the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) would continue engaging with the High Commission regarding the unacceptable behavior of Nigerian visitors in South Africa.
