National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola briefly appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, where he faces four counts of violating the Public Finance Management Act. The charges relate to a controversial R360-million tender awarded to alleged criminal figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala. Masemola maintained that he acted appropriately, saying he stopped the contract once concerns were raised.
Masemola also questioned why he was being made to appear alongside Matlala and 12 co-accused, noting that he is not facing corruption charges. He expressed frustration over the situation, arguing that efforts should instead be focused on fighting organised crime, but acknowledged that he had no choice but to comply with the legal process.
