Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, has instructed the Emfuleni Local Municipality to investigate allegations of an irregular lease agreement involving municipal land. The concerns relate to approximately 2,895 m² of council property that was reportedly leased to private individuals who then established a pub on the site.
Mamabolo has requested a full investigation to determine whether proper procedures were followed and if the property was leased at market-related value. Reports suggest the land was leased for three years at R3,000 per month. The municipality has been given 30 days to submit a report on the matter as part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability and governance in local government.
