DURBAN – Tensions flared outside Sherwood Hall in Durban as a group of Malawian nationals confronted anti-illegal immigration activist Ngizwe Mchunu and members of March and March. The crowd, some carrying sticks and chanting, said Mchunu’s presence near their temporary camp was provocative.
Police were forced to intervene to prevent violence as emotions escalated. The group, who have been staying at the hall grounds since last week, said they are willing to leave South Africa but felt targeted by ongoing anti-migrant sentiments and protests, insisting they did not want Mchunu in their vicinity.
