The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development says it does not have enough funds to fully cover the six-month extension of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into police corruption. Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi told Parliament that the department has already spent R123 million out of its R147 million allocated budget and has approached Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana for additional funding to keep the inquiry going.
Kubayi warned that the funding shortfall could place pressure on other areas of the department’s work if not addressed. She also highlighted rising costs linked to other investigations, including the Nkabinde Enquiry, although officials have indicated that both the Madlanga and Khampepe Commissions are still operating within their budgets for now.
