BELLVILLE – A Grade 10 learner in Bellville, Cape Town, has died after an alleged classroom assault involving another learner. The incident is believed to have been triggered by a dispute linked to the alleged theft of a cellphone, during which one learner reportedly struck the other on the head inside the classroom.
The injured learner was taken to hospital but later died despite receiving medical treatment. Police have opened a murder case, with no arrests yet made. The Western Cape Education Department says the accused learner has been suspended and will face disciplinary action, while counselling support has been provided to the school community as investigations continue.
