The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development has removed 19 children from the Ikhaya Labafundi bakaJehova Church in KwaMaphumulo amid allegations of child rights violations and the isolation of members from society. The intervention was confirmed during an oversight visit by government officials and the CRL Rights Commission.

CRL Chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva raised concerns about alleged practices within the group, including discouraging members from seeking medical care, taking chronic medication, or pursuing formal education. She emphasised the need for a regulatory body to oversee churches, following reports of potential human rights abuses.
