Johannesburg Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo has passed on at the age of 53. He had been admitted to hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 less than a week ago.

At the time, his office said he had been in self-quarantine as part of the recovery process.

Last year, Makhubo had gone into isolation after a staff member in his office tested positive for coronavirus. As a precautionary measure, the entire staff complement in the office tested for the coronavirus.

Yesterday, Gauteng again recorded the majority of COVID-19 cases with 11 747 new infections.
