Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has praised Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube for calling for accountability over a R285 million textbook tender. The minister has referred the matter to National Treasury after reports that Lighthouse Publishers Limited was awarded the contract to supply Grade 1 to 3 textbooks, despite allegedly being registered only days after the tender specifications were issued.

Makaneta has welcomed the move and urged a full and transparent investigation, warning that the allegations raise serious concerns about the management of public funds amid deepening inequality in schools. He stressed that delays or irregularities in textbook delivery directly harm learners and teachers, arguing that textbooks are essential tools for education and opportunity.
