JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport says rehabilitation work on the R553 (Golden Highway) is progressing according to schedule, with practical completion expected by mid-September 2026. The project, which stretches from the R558 intersection to beyond the M68 (Chris Hani Road/Columbine Avenue), includes road widening, new median islands, improved drainage, resurfacing and traffic signal upgrades to improve safety and traffic flow.

The department has urged motorists to drive carefully through construction zones and obey temporary traffic measures. It also raised concerns over the theft and vandalism of road signs and safety equipment, saying these acts put road users and construction workers at risk. Officials say regular stakeholder meetings and public updates will continue to ensure the project stays on track while minimising disruptions.
