The Gauteng Department of Education says schools were given funds in November 2025 to pay municipal accounts and rejected claims that they were burdened with unpaid electricity bills. It says schools were aware of their responsibility to settle these accounts.
However, some schools failed to pay despite receiving allocations, leading to power cuts. The department is engaging municipalities to prevent further disruptions and expects new funding allocations by 15 May 2026.
