The Gauteng Department of Health will start a phased rollout of the HIV prevention injection Lenacapavir on 8 June 2026 across 133 health facilities in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and the West Rand. The programme is aimed at people at high risk of HIV infection as part of efforts to reduce new infections and support South Africa’s goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
The injectable, which is administered twice a year, will be offered alongside existing prevention methods such as oral PrEP, condoms, HIV testing and voluntary medical male circumcision. The Gauteng Department of Health will use initial stock to reach more than 56,000 eligible people, with trained healthcare workers and monitoring systems in place to support rollout, awareness and service delivery.
