The Gauteng Department of Health is working to reduce a backlog of about 30,600 patients waiting for surgery, most of them long-standing cases. The delays have been caused by staff shortages, infrastructure challenges, and past disruptions like water supply problems, which led to cancelled operations.
To fix this, the department has introduced a digital system to track patients, extended operating hours, and increased surgical capacity. They are also hiring more specialists, improving equipment, and coordinating better between hospitals to reduce waiting times and improve patient care.
