While local health authorities are continuing to record thousands of new daily COVID-19 infections there is finally some good news.

Acting Minister of Health Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane confirmed on Friday that the country has passed the peak of its third COVID-19 wave.

“We have also seen a significant drop in numbers in Gauteng, which has been the epicentre of the third wave, that we have seen more numbers and we that is what we have always been worried about,” she said.

“Although the 4,988 new cases are still quite high, it is a significant drop from the provincial peak.”

Meanwhile, Kubayi-Ngubane is urging Gauteng residents to continue observing COVID-19 protocols.

This comes as the province gradually sees a decrease in the number of new infections.
