The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has introduced a new internal approach to road construction, with the Heidelberg Construction Office leading a flagship project on Road D781 in Ekurhuleni. The initiative aims to strengthen the department’s in-house capacity and reduce dependence on external contractors.
The project is designed to improve efficiency by using internal expertise, equipment, and project management systems. Officials say this will help accelerate service delivery, reduce costs, and ensure better quality control and accountability.
The department also plans to use the project as a model for future developments, incorporating innovation, skills development, and partnerships with higher education institutions to build long-term capacity in the sector.
