Gauteng faces a major shortage of schools, with more than 200 additional schools needed to ease severe classroom overcrowding. Many schools, especially in township areas, have 30 or more learners per class, highlighting the pressure on the public education system.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says building the required schools would cost about R35 billion, while the department’s total budget is R70 billion, most of which is spent on salaries. He believes public-private partnerships could help address the shortfall, while education experts stress the need for a clearer understanding of the crisis followed by urgent action.
