The Gauteng government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democracy, constitutional values and social cohesion as South Africa marks Freedom Day. The province reflected on its key role in the liberation struggle, highlighting townships such as Soweto, Alexandra, Sharpeville and others as important centres of resistance against apartheid.

The statement also stressed the importance of arts and heritage in the fight for freedom, noting how creative expression helped raise awareness locally and internationally. Today, the arts sector continues to promote unity, healing and economic growth, while Freedom Month also marks major historical anniversaries including the 1956 Women’s March, the 1976 Soweto uprising, and 30 years of the Constitution.
