DURBAN- Four people have died following a shootout between community patrollers and suspected robbers in Bhambayi, Inanda, north of Durban. Police say the patrollers encountered three men believed to be involved in robberies, leading to a confrontation and an exchange of gunfire. One patroller and one suspected robber were declared dead at the scene.
Two additional community patrollers later died in hospital from gunshot wounds sustained during the incident. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has urged organised community crime-fighting groups to work closely with police and avoid direct confrontations with suspected criminals.
