KINSHASA – Delirious fans flooded the streets of Kinshasa, dancing in the rain after the Democratic Republic of Congo secured a historic World Cup spot for the first time in 52 years. Defender Axel Tuanzebe, who plays for Burnley in the Premier League, scored the lone goal in a 1-0 extra-time victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff in Mexico.

The DR Congo will compete in Group K at this summer’s World Cup in North America, facing Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan. The nation last appeared at the finals in 1974 as Zaire, where they were defeated by Scotland, Yugoslavia, and Brazil.
