JOHANNESBURG- Gauteng MEC Botha has reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to tackling illegal dumping and waste burning in Kya Sands. In a media statement issued on 15 May 2026, Botha said the Department of Environment began responding to community complaints shortly after his appointment in June 2025. Coordinated enforcement operations involving SAPS, JMPD, Home Affairs, the City of Johannesburg and other stakeholders led to arrests, fines, impoundments, facility closures and environmental rehabilitation efforts.

Botha acknowledged criticism from some community groups who viewed the operations as politically motivated, saying the department reviewed and adjusted certain methods while continuing enforcement work. He stressed that visible and coordinated action remains necessary to address worsening illegal dumping and burning in the area. The department is now preparing the next phase of operations, with further announcements expected soon.
