The Border Management Authority (BMA) has announced successful bidders for the redevelopment of six of South Africa’s busiest land ports of entry, in a major infrastructure modernisation drive. The announcement was made by BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato alongside Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber and Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza at a briefing in Pretoria. The project will be delivered through public-private partnerships aimed at improving border security, efficiency, and the movement of goods and people.
The selected consortia include Baobab Concession for Beitbridge and Oshoek, Raulux Consortium for Lebombo, Kgorong Consortium for Maseru Bridge, Kopfontein Consortium for Kopfontein, and Imbani Consortium for Ficksburg Bridge. Construction is expected to begin later this year or early next year, with phased upgrades over two to three years introducing smart border technology and improved traveller facilities. Government says the upgrades are expected to boost trade and economic growth, while further consultations will continue ahead of implementation.
